A stunning work of architecture, the Raquel contrasts dramatically with its not-so-picturesque surroundings, a rather humble residential area whose one, redeeming virtue is its proximity to the Plaza Vieja and other sites of interest in the Old Town.

The hotel’s ornate and eclectic facade is well matched by the interiors, which are likely to make a powerful first impression: shining marble floors, polished columns and posh period sofas surround you in the kind of palatial luxury you might expect to find in a presidential mansion or high-class art museum. The most striking feature of this grand lobby is doubtless the curved fanlight which crowns a high atrium past the reception desk, which lets in soothing tones of yellow and draws many glances skyward.

This "lavishness" is not the only delightful peculiarity which sets the hotel apart from others in the Old Town. The Raquel is also known for its references to Jewish tradition and faith, which consist of various decorative items (such as a stone engraving of a star of David at the reception) and symbolic artifacts (mezuzahs affixed to room doorframes) scattered about the establishment. The elegant hotel restaurant also serves typical Jewish cuisine, such as borscht and latkes.

Though the surrounding buildings detract from the view somewhat, the rooftop solarium is a good spot to enjoy a drink or gaze lazily at the city. It is also an attractive venue for wedding and other ceremonies or gatherings.

Fitness buffs or those wanting to work up a sweat can avail themselves of a well-appointed gym just below the lobby entrance. A massage service is also offered.

Arranged around the impressive atrium, the accommodations are comfortable and stylishly decorated, sharing in the eclectic elegance of the establishment.

Hotel Raquel Room & Rates

Standard Room... from €81
The Raquel’s 21 standard rooms are well-designed and tastefully decorated, done in pale, creamy colours that lend this combination a soothing and welcoming feel (The opulent drapes over the tall windows, wrought-iron beds and ornately-tiled floors do not create an austere, stuffy feeling; rather, a strangely practical and relaxed ambience is achieved). The bathrooms are spacious and feature tub showers. Couples best secure one of the mere 2 standard rooms with matrimonial beds, and those who can't do without fresh air should certainly book one of the few rooms with stone balconies (or opt for a junior suite). Fourteen rooms have views.

Hotel Raquel Location

At the east end of a rather unappealing residential area, the Raquel's immediate surroundings are less than pretty, but the Plaza Vieja is just down the street and the hotel is about 5 blocks away from all of the more interesting places in the colonial heart of Havana. A stroll up San Ignacio takes you straight to the Cathedral of Havana.

Havana: Raquel Hotel Reviews: "Extraordinary fine hotel"

Had the chance to stay in Raquel back in 2006. I can say only positive words about the hotel. First of all, very warm welcome at reception desk, English langauge spoken - muy importante para mi - lovely room, spacious, comfortable bed, location is excellent. Breakfast was very good, choice might be slightly better in variety, but fully okay. Good advise for all wanting to stay in centre of Havana in a romantic, nice place. Roof terrace is nice adendum for visitors, too.

If I go back to Cuba one day, I would definitely go back to this hotel, it is authentic and more than anything very central location
